This song is part of my history & origins with folk music, being influenced from an early age by my 3 older brothers. Ugo, who introduced me to Woody Guthrie, Mike & Pete Seeger, Chad Mitchell Trio, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan to name but a few, AND he had a Hofner nylon string guitar, which he let me play.
Ugo also introduced me to the father of Folk music in SA, Keith Blundell who ran a folk club in Johannesburg. Whilst playing with the Dunbar Street Folk Group in the late 60’s I started singing Lord Franklin and have ever since.
The song is the story of the one-time Governor of Tasmania, Lord John Franklin, who approached the British Throne for use of Britannia, the Royal Fleet, which was lying idle in port after the Napoleonic wars. Lord Franklin promised to find the North West passage, to the east, including its lucrative spice trade.
3 attempts were made by Lord Franklin and his crew to find the North West passage before he, crew & ship disappeared at sea.
His wife (whom I imagine may have written this song) pleaded with the King to send a search party. After years of searching, Lord Franklin’s remains, those of some of his crew and their long boat they were using as a sled, were found mere miles from the western shores of Alaska with few clues to their demise
