about

Two young biodynamic farmers came to help us during the early years of growing herbs at Meadowsweet Farm. Sean O’Dear, a hot blooded, red haired Irishman with a quick temper, and Ursa Bear, a young lady from New Zealand who had a fantastic ability to harmonise.
Experienced farmers they were, and they helped to enhance the fertility and productivity of the lands. However neither had experience of the (then) apartheid era South African rural socio-economic realities, but had endless wonderful ideological advice and ‘guidance’ coming from their 1st world experiences & expectations.
We soon realised that they were really undermining the peace and harmony of the workforce, which also had a disrupting effect on our young family’s integrity. We needed to part ways.
My wife took the three boys off to Durban for the weekend, to escape the turmoil that was erupting in our home. Soon after the farmers left, I was alone at the farm for the first time since moving there. It was blissfully quiet.
